review 1: Fun. Another Hellboy spin-off, although you had to be really paying attention to remember Grey. More enjoyable than Lobster Johnson (though I personally enjoy the pulps more than Victoriana). Very Mignola, & that is a good thing - this is very Lovecrafty with a touch of Poe (& a little steampunk?) concerning the occult, demons, secret societies, a looming apocalypse, and Sir Edward Grey, who investigates all of the above. Kind of like Van Helsing crossed with Hellboy's dad, Professor Bruttenholm. As always wish MM was drawing as well as writing, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards. Same artist as Baltimore, Stenbeck (& glad the coloring maintains the standard MM palette) - but I enjoyed this story a little more than that one. Still, those who enjoy Mignola will... more feel right at home here. Would much rather be reading this than BPRD... feels a bit like Moore's League, minus the literary references (and general show-off-ery). I'll read more.
review 2: Solid Victorian Gothic horror, and a good piece of the Hellboy universe. An obvious homage to the material that has informed and inspired Mignola's work, it can certainly serve as a gateway into the world of Gothic horror; especially for those who have never experienced that arm of the genre. Artistically and atmospherically, Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels is a fine and entertaining read... especially late at night with the lights dimmed. less
