review 1: I really wanted to give this book five stars, I really did as I adore Miranda Dickinsons books, but I just didn't think this one was one of my favourites in comparison to some of her others. It follows a girl called Romily, who at the start of the book receives a heart stopping kiss from a stranger at the Christmas market. Ever since she can't keep the handsome stranger out of her mind and so she decides to embark on a 'quest' to find him. Along the way, she starts up a blog called 'it started with a kiss'- hence the book title, where she documents her journey to finding the handsome stranger once more. I really liked the main character Romily in this book and I also really liked alot of the other characters and so in all it was a relatively good read. But my only complai... morents would be that there were points in the book where I would get a bit bored of just band rehearsals and was craving a bit more action and I also didn't really like her choice in the end of who she chose to be with as I felt he didn't have enough of a part in the book for me to feel a connection with him, but yeah...all in all a nice read so I still gave it four stars :)
review 2: The book as a story deserves a 4 star.. or maximum a 4.5I would have given beyond 5 stars if this was a movie. I've still given this a 5, because, for some reason, this book has become close to my heart, somehow struck a strange warm chord with me. I just cannot shake tht feeling of warmth and the crazy lopsided grin on my face..the sheer cheering effect this had on me. So, yes, my review would seem a bit biased and umm..maybe not make sense. But, I read a book, it made me feel good, even though it was destined to be cheesy and predictable, it did cheer me to no ends. So this one's straight into 5 stars! If I wanted to give it a non biased honest review, then I'd say:- it had a predictable ending from the start. But it actually doesn't end that w ay. That twist in the end was almost heartbreaking tbh. Yet, I can;'t be angry at Romily. Because, i now know her reasons. But it does seem all extremely cheesy and full of the it-can't-happen-in-real-life feel. The ending especially. But nevermind, the journey was worth it- the close knit group of Romily andher friends is a breath of fresh air. I really like books that focus on friendship and show real aspects of each character. Not just dismiss as the sides. This book came through that part with flying colors. What with slightly crazy Wren, initially suspectable D'wayne, loyal and lovely Jack and ever so cute Sophie, stubborn and grumpy Charlie and kiddish yet full of strong manerisms Tom. - I have always loved books which have friends working together. BEcause it's a dream for any person. And because it's so nice to imagine yourself working with your best of friends. Sounds SO MUCH FUN. This book had that in abundance. Fun and friends. What more do you need?- One of my favorite ever characters, in this book and beyond this book now, are Uncle Dud and Auntie M. I loved them. Their enthusaism, their love for Romily, their sheer cheerfullness. Their own story was beautiful and I just couldn't keep myself from smiling whenever Uncle Dud and Auntie M came into the scene. It was just so homely. - Christmas. Another one of my favourite elements in the world. And What more than Weddings mixed all along with it? Definite Home run there. Loved the descriptions of the gigs. It was absolutely enchanting.- Love. Okay now let's come to the main subject of the book. The elephant in the room. The Kiss. The kiss, to start with was giddy-with-butterflies-in-my-stomach-and-chills-through-my-spine-FULLY written. The whole moment, from the ice baubles to when he leaves, if just beautiful. I loved it. But after the initial effect of it, I really had my doubts you know with her really finding the guy. I men, i wanted her to, but I was confused too. With Charlie predictably in the scene. -Which now takes us to the part that kinda hurt me a lil. I really didnt see that end coming. I mean, some scenes with Charlie and Romily were so, so beautiful, like the chase, at Frankie's wedding. It was so good. And then towards the end I was almost giddy with anticipation. ALMOST. But then that ending....Even though the ending too, was reallybeautiful and logical too.. but it was just SO unexpected that it took me a while (actually even now i'm a lil grumpy about the ending) to adjust to it. But even so, it was written beautifully, all with humour and sighfully beautiful setting and ofcourse the Kiss...Overall verdict - This would seem to be a predictable passtime but it has more elements to it than just the kiss and the romance. So if you like friends, music, weddings, christmas AND Romance. This one's going to be close to you heart too. less
