review 1: Actual rating: 3.5I debated going to a three, but I want to read the sequel so I decided the book should be given four stars. The Catholic school that the main character, Maria Kawai, came from and Catholic influence throughout the book was interesting. I, of course, didn't like how she just dismissed Religion yet wore a cross. I also disliked how the nuns seem to have mentally abused her by saying terrible things about her. I wish there were more books about a positive influence of the Catholic church? I'm not Catholic, but when you only see one side of an issue... Anyway. This book was a fun romance and I liked Maria's personality. Another problem I had with the book is that her parents were no where to be found. What did they have to say when she was expelled? About her ... morepersonality? Is she an orphan? Because that's super overused.
review 2: This a very atypical story, especially for shojo manga. The main character is completely unlikable, at least to everyone else. Much like "Bones" from the tv show, Maria doesn't understand white lies or sugar coating words, or even keeping things to herself. Even worse, she has abnormally keen insight into people's motives and true feelings. This quickly drives the girls in her class to hate her and they try to sabotage her and get her kicked out of school. Luckily, two boys take pity on her and try to teach her how to get along with others. Maria has more of an effect on them, than they do on her, however. less
