review 1: Not having seen the popular 1997 movie, I was depending on this book for insight and information. The personal narrative style was inviting, but some details were confusing. For example, the 'pawn' was not clearly explained, depending on the surrounding text to inform the reader. A remarkable story, but I don't think it would hold the interest of most of my elementary readers, yet it might make a good read aloud to encourage discussion. The combination of images of historical images and original, color illustrations depicting the events are interesting.

... more. Edinger had hoped for the book to be nonfiction/informational but the lack of available primary resources have placed the book in the genre of historic fiction. This beautifully illustrated pictures, created by Robert Byrd, add to the appeal of the book. Children in grades 4-6 will find the book compelling when asked to research the slave trade. This story is quite different from the horror stories often heard about the slavery. Africa is My Home is a must add to a unit about the Slave Trade, as this story tells of a girl's journey back to Africa, after having been sold into slavery. less
