review 1: Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Jamie Campbell is a fierce warrior, a clever man and an astute politician. He's never been in love, but when he meets Caitrina Lamont it doesn't take him long to realize that it's not only lust that he feels for his new bride. He does everything in his power to help her, to give her her land back, he rebuilds the keep for her and what does he get? Caitrina's behaviour is the reason I withdrew 1 star from the rating. She, simply put, pisses me off. lol Her lack of trust in Jamie was the cause of many of the problems that befall on her and her clans. That said, this was a really enjoyable read and Jamie is a wonderful character imho.
review 2: Ah the deals, they'll always get to me, even when the chance a book is for me is nil.
... more :)I found the Highland Warrior plain and boring, without much to the plot, not even the angst that should have flowed given the background. My biggest problem was that the story flowed the way the author wanted, without any inner coherence in characters. (By the way both are childish, I'm not sure I appreciate at all the dislike poured on the girl. She's not the only one with flaws. She's childish, but he is no better. He thinks he's god answer to her problem...)I'll make a simple example. He forced her to marry him. If she wants her family castle back (and so a place for her people), she has to marry him. Their wedding night the "blackmail" erupts, but he says he wants her freely, that she hasn't been compelled (in a way....), and that she can go away if she does wish so. The story could have gone two ways: she could have gone or could have rebelled to the lie. But to do so the author would have had to keep the sex out of the story. And I guess in a romance this is a no-no. So the problem is simply ignored. Her answer: I gave you my word. huh?So we have a book full of the growing pains of a cosseted girl who has to understand life isn't black and white, and the growing pains of a man who should know it, but doesn't. As I said before, I dislike the implied misogynism in the girl-blaming. Yes, she's a child (not her fault), she doesn't trust him (again, why should she?), she's not always a grown-up. (Eh, it happens...) Yes, she's not the most endearing personality around, but the bitch-bashing is always dangerous. Above all because his faults are also glaring. Or should we all faint because of his maleness? I mean, he forces her hand and marries her, and then worries why she doesn’t love him yet. MehAnyway, I clearly didn't like the book. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing I would recommend. less
