review 1: This book was highly entertaining and I had a whirlwind of a ride reading it. I gave it 4 stars because I simply had too many problems with it. For one, I didn't enjoy some of the romances. At some points I though some characters were stupid, and some scenes were predictable. It sounds really bad doesn't it? But what I absolutely loved was the magic and the world. I loved the fantasy parts of the plot and I really did enjoy some characters (e.g. Magnus and Lucia). Some parts were somewhat surprising towards the end, so that was good. At the end I really liked Cleo too (though at first I thought she was annoying).
review 2: I bought this book on a whim while on vacation, and I don't entirely regret it. That being said, I was disappointed. The writing was very s
... moreimplistic, which, for a novel labelled YA, isn't uncommon, but this went beyond that. I would even go so far as to say it was written with middle grade simplicity. The plot and characters have the potential to be so much more than they are with just a little more complexity. I haven't read the paranormal romances that Ms. Rhodes writes under a different name, so I cannot say if she writes them with more depth and complexity, but it seems like she was trying too hard to adapt her writing style to fit what she believed would be a suitable style for a much younger market and ended up taking it too far. A shame; the concept had a lot of potential. less
