review 1: Unfortunately, I do not understand why this series has so much hype. The characters are very underdeveloped and the plot is so fast-paced that many of its aspects are not explained very well. However, my biggest problem with this series is that there are so many romantic relationships. Each main character has at least 3 love interests. This leads to none of them being well-developed.Overall, I enjoyed this book. I just had a lot of major issues with it. I give this book 2.5 out of 5 stars.
review 2: I thought this was better than the first one. Here are my notes from the book:So, we're pretending that Aron is vapid and annoying? We're ignoring all the rape threats. Multiple rape threats. And blackmail. And murder. That incited a war. Yet Cleo's biggest complain
... moret is that he's vapid and annoying. Yah. I hate all the watcher parts. I like that, unlike game of thrones, there are actually regular people fighting for a change in their lives, not just nobles fighting for power. Is Nic the dumbest person in this book? He's certainly the worst guard. Omg, Cleo is seriously the worst. I get that she didn't want to be forced into this marriage, but this little kid act of stomping her feet and saying "I hate you" everytime she starts to notice her husband showing a real feeling is getting old. I know he acts like a dick to hide it, but seriously, what are you good at. Cuz you can't make plans, fight, aren't smart, your stupid 'morals' about lying protected a would-be rapist, and now you're showing you can't read people. Ugh. less

GAH...400 pages and we are no closer to finding the damn Kindred than we were in the 1st book! Talk about a filler novel! I'm not saying that I will not read the next installment, cause I totally will. But come on, there better be some Kindred finding, magic wielding and clear romantic partner picking (cause I am old and need concrete answers as to whom I am supposed to ship, stop thinking everyone is hot and every kiss is magical!). Overall, my biggest disappointment with this book was that while lots of things happened (I mean Morgan Rhodes is NOT afraid of killing characters off). Nothing actually HAPPENED. We are no closer in this book to discovering anything or getting anywhere (like actually, that road isn't anywhere close to finished).Final Recommendations: if you like high fantasy, explosive magic, vaguely bad guys, truly bad guys, a whole lot of blood & if you were invested enough in the first book to continue on regardless of whether anything happens til the 3rd or 4th installment.

I actually would give it more of a 2.5ish star rating as I liked the story and I finished the book rather quickly, but I actually had forgotten that I had read it until I was looking at the past books I had ordered in my Amazon account. And, even though I remember liking the book, it was hardly memorable. As I'm typing this review I'm trying to remember how the book ended and I'm having a hard time recalling. Not a great sign.

Better than the first one, but still pretty bad.
