review 1: With Fortress Frontier, Myke Cole eradicated pretty much any of the criticisms I had with Control Point. A huge, huge plus goes towards new protagonist and POV character, Alan Bookbinder, who I found to be a much more likeable hero, with a particularly interesting power. It was very easy to sympathise with him and even made Oscar Britton's parts more digestible when spread out against Bookbinder's parts. The action in Fortress Frontier is just as explosive and heart-pounding as Control Point and I think Cole is definitely going to become known for his ability to pen these sections so well. I can't wait to see how his writing develops with the third Shadow Ops book.
review 2: I absolutely love the environment that Myke Cole has created with this series. Having
... more"sorcerers" in a modern military and the impact to society is great! There is definitely room for improvement in writing style, characterization and motivations, but I am enjoying the journey these books have given me. This book focuses mostly on another character which was a nice change since Oscar from the first novel was whiny, confused and generally not very intelligent. It's always frustrating when the only competent characters are the "bad guys." less
