Shadow Ops
review 1: I gave the first two books of Myke Cole's Shadow Ops series 4 stars due to minor quibbles of character and writing style. in Breach Zone Cole has easily fixed all my quibbles and turned me into a fan.Military Sci Fi doesn't interest me and military fantasy is only slightly more interesting but the cover quote by Peter V Brett (one of my favorite authors) was enough to pique my interest. I'll read anything that's compared to the X-Men. Where Control Point was too much Black Hawk Down and not enough X-Men Breach Zone swings the other way and scratches that magical mutant itch.I loved the magic system. The simplicity and breadth of use made it one of those I'd love to steal, kind of like Brandon Sanderson's magic systems. Where I found Oscar Britton too angsty in the middle o... moref Control Point his leadership role in both Fortress Frontier and Breach Zone made him much more interesting. Bookbinder is great as usual and I would have loved see him get more screen time. His work against the goblins and leviathan was brilliant but once he reached land he faded into the background to much for my liking. Harlequin and Scylla's relationship drove the book and made it work. The final battle was epic and any time you bring feuding people together for a greater cause you've won me over. Truelove's march of the dead was the perfect amount of creepy and awesome. I certainly hope he's okay.Breach Zone closes the trilogy perfectly and I look forward to reading more in this universe.
review 2: Another satisfying installment of the Shadow Ops series by Myke Cole. The world of magic and Spec Ops grows even more entangled as the other-worldly invaders led by an old enemy threaten the world. Old enemies must fight together and new alliances are forged.I've very much enjoyed this series from the start. One of the best examples of military-urban fantasy around. Consistent writing, high tension scenes and exceptionally detailed characters draw the reader in. Cole's writing style is precise, measured and extremely tight in every regard.Action scenes come fast and furious and the novel builds suspense steadily. The only nitpicks I had were;- the finale seemed to occur too quickly. I was expecting a couple of curveballs but didn't see any thrown. Satisfying, but quick.- too much backstory about the relationship between a protag and primary antag.- this is an odd thing to write, but the author has too many excellent characters. Britton, Bookbinder, Harlequin and others are all top notch; but there were almost too many POVs and scene changes.Great book in a great series. less
