review 1: Dear Mrs. Kerns, I have read a book called, "Neil Armstrong is my uncle" by Nan Marino. This book is about Muscle Man McGinty, who is the so called "toughest kid in town". Muscle Man is always lying to people about Neil Armstrong being his uncle. He never can prove that a famous person is not a part of his family. Muscle Man wants to prove that he is good at everything, so what he does is he challenges the whole block to a game of kickball. A girl named Tamara, finally realizes that Muscle Man is lying to everyone. Tamara wants to get proof if anything he has ever said to people was true or not. The rest is for you to figure out. have fun reading this book. Sincerely, Faith Kar... morelen
review 2: I read this aloud to my third grade class. It's set in 1959 so there's references to Neil Armstrong landing on the moon and an 18-yr-old boy from the neighborhood dying in Vietnam. That part was really sad . . . I had to back tears. The whole time the neighborhood kids are playing a huge game of kickball, and it reminded me of that movie The Sand Lot. I thought it would be neat for my kids to hear a book set in that time era for them to see how the 'good ole' days were.' Unfortunately, they didn't enjoy this one so much. They just thought the MC was really mean, and I don't think they fully grasped how Kebsie and 'Muscle Man' were foster kids. So my 3 stars are based on a class read aloud, but I really enjoyed the novel. I can see why it was chosen as a Sunshine State Book! less
