review 1: First of all I will say this edition of the book has a pretty misleading cover. I found it to be quite a turn-off, as it made me think the story was just going to be a goofy, mindless story for little kids. (Happy to see a different edition with a different cover is available.) Anyway, the story itself turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise! It took me about a third of the book to really get into it. But, once it's heart started to reveal itself, my feelings changed rapidly. It's actually a lovely book with the main character learning to face some complicated feelings and situations and relationships. And the last part about watching the moon landing really captured the exhilaration of that moment. Beautifully done. So glad I read the book , and I learned, yet again, ... moreto not judge a book by its cover.
review 2: From the first page I wanted to know how "Muscle Man" would be revealed and find out what happened. The truth is our narrator is missing key information about what is going on around her and therefore makes errors in judgment. It's not entirely her fault - her parents are just as out of touch -- her mom absorbed in soap operas and her father self-absorbed. They don't even plan on watching the historic moon landing. Overall this story provides a glimpse into the suburban 1960s from the eyes of a child --enjoyable for adults. It also gives a glimpse into what's its like to be a kid who has to figure things out on their own. less
