review 1: This is a beautiful book, written and photographed by two people who really love trees. Although I don't picture myself, as the author suggests, becoming as excited about tree-viewing as I am about birdwatching, I will certainly be following some of her suggestions, to choose a few trees and really get to know them through close observation, keeping a tree journal with dates and drawings and photos, and just, as she says, seeing what is there right in front of my own nose!
review 2: The author describes life cycles and seasonal processes of trees, with detailed attention to 10 species. The photography by Robert Llewellyn is stunning, and made me long to head outside with my camera. However, after reading the description of his process: “stitching together ei
... moreght to forty-five images of each subject, each shot at a different point of focus” I was pretty sure mine would not measure up. The photographs are taken against a white background, which adds to their clarity. The writing is as exquisite as the photographs; author Nancy Ross Hugo is eloquent, loves trees, and includes thoughtful commentary on observing and learning. The only disappointment for me is that almost all of the featured trees (exception: redbud!) thrive in Virginia or places with similar climates, rather than in the western U.S. less

Truth be told, I didn't read much of this, but it's a beauty to page through.
