review 2: Recommended (and owned by) Vic. Good choice!I'm only on volume 3 of 8, so some way to go yet, but the characterisation, plot and drawing is great so far. I won't comment on the art, that's not really my thing, other than to say that if is not a difficult manga visually; the layout is clear and strong, and most characters are differentiated well visually. The plot is an interesting take on a common SF theme: the place of human-like robots within human society, developing many of the themes started by Asimov. We have implicit and explicit laws of robotics, taken to the stage of actual societal laws, rather than just written into positronic brains, with concomitant robot rights as constraints on humans enshrined in the legal system. So a major theme is 'how human is a robot with a human-like AI', and commentary therefore on 'how human are humans' in a moral sense, particularly when interacting with robots. There is the potential for a fairly cliched approach that concludes that the robots have more humanity than the humans, but I'm hoping and expecting that it will be more nuanced than that. The series has started exploring the nature of the dividing line between advanced AIs and humans, and the impact of highly functioning AIs on human society. In some parts I sense the influence of Watchmen on this series; a more realistic, rather than caricatured, portrayal of robots with positronic brains in a futuristic, and dark, human world, in a similar way to Watchmen's take on vigilante super-heroes. There are parallels too in the development of an ongoing problematic political situation and how that affects individual characters, both high profile and lower. less
