review 1: Both my grandmothers died of complications from Alzheimer's and another form of severe dementia. My mom seems sure she'll succumb to it, which is a big reason I read it. I'd buy and ship a copy to her but even if she read it, I know she wouldn't heed Dr. Barnard's much studied, peer-reviewed, heralded methods to fight memory loss--adopting a plant-based diet, regular exercise, and activities to strengthen cognitive function. Oh, how I wish she and so many others would, they'd learn how vitally important a role nutrition plays in fighting all disease. That we've all been misled when it comes to the truth about nutrition all our lives, it's nothing to be ashamed of, and changing the way you eat isn't expensive, time-consuming, or sentencing us to a life of bland food--far fr... moreom it. Food's never looked or tasted as good to me and I've heard countless vegans say the same thing.I did learn that every medication I take for depression, anxiety, and RA (and the gluten intolerance RA causes in me) causes memory loss and lack of concentration (side effects). I figured as much, but to see the exact names of my meds listed, knowing I swallow them every day, and every day struggle to remember simple words, names, even writing words in a dyslexic manner or joining them, and "monkey mind," thoughts all over the place, constant mind and eyes wandering from the page as I read (reading's great for strengthening cognitive function; I wonder if my memory and concentration issues would be worse if I wasn't a big reader) or write...well, at least I know if I can find healthy alternative ways to manage my illnesses I may be able to take less or stop taking some of the meds.Highly recommended for everyone, not just those with the dementia gene or family history. Food heals in ways you can't imagine.
review 2: love eating, and it is quite difficult for me to control my food cravings. This book makes some suggestions for how to conquer food cravings as well as sharpen our memory. In this book three steps are introduced for the brain:The first step is to take power foods. Vitamin E is a must to take. Included are broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, avocados, and nuts & seeds. We should also take natural fats such as omega-3 oil. Aluminum is very dangerous for our heath, so it is better to use aluminum-free cookware and containers, not to mention to avoid the foods which include aluminum. The second step is to do both mental and physical exercises. The third step is to have a sound sleep. In order to create a good night sleep condition, I will refrain from drinking coffee and turn out lights at 10 p.m.Aha moment was that food cravings have much to do with "dopamine," which is triggered by food, a receptive mate, and drugs. less
