The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel
review 1: I feel badly for saying this, but I forgot I had listened to The Graveyard Book in audiobook format before picking up the first volume of the graphic novel, and even though the audiobook didn't make a significant impression on me enough to remember I listened to it, I remember liking it considerably more than I like the graphic novel adaptation. The art has achieved widespread critical acclaim, but I personally did not find it memorable or find it added to the story. This would be a good way for a visual learner to experience The Graveyard Book, but it just wasn't my thing.
review 2: An adaptation worthy of its award-winning source. Following the murder of his parents, Nobody Owens is given sanctuary by the most unlikely of beings...ghosts. These apparitions, a
... morend the graveyard they live in, are atmospheric, but not scary. All the ghosts, unlike the living, are outlined in blue rather than black ink, and along with the spindly style, and desaturated hues, they capture the tone of the book. Russell not only maintains the feel of the original, but the pacing as well through his use of the layout, and carefully chosen moments. Bod receives an unusual education, primarily History and English from the ghosts, and broader guidance from the shadowy Silas. He has plenty of encounters with the living, but it is the young girl Scarlett who instills in him curiosity about the outside. As he grows he explores his isolated world, only gradually daring to step beyond the safety of the gates. This fantastical coming-of-age story starts with death and ends with life, comparing and contrasting the two throughout. Alongside the exploration, and contemplation is some mystery too. Why does Jack hunt Bod? Who is Silas? What makes Bod special? All of which come to a satisfying conclusion in volume two. The Graveyard Book is one of the few stories where it is truly worth reading both the original and the graphic novel versions. less
