review 1: This is the fourth book in Nele Neuhaus's Oliver von Bodenstein/Pia Kirchhoff detective series, although it's the first novel translated into English (from the original German). An embittered young man, Tobius Sartorius, is finally released from prison after serving ten years for a double murder he still has no memory of. Returning to the isolated village where he grew up, he finds that everyone is resolutely against him and his parents have been punished in his absence. This is a deliciously dark novel, intricately paced, steeped in human mystery, where virtually everyone the police encounter is either lying, hiding the truth, or obstructing their investigation. Even the police on the case sometimes have feet of clay. For those who like their murder mysteries bleak and ho... morenest, don't miss this one!
review 2: This was my first taste of this particular series and I wasn't overly impressed. The story was intriguing but slow. And I couldn't get over the injustice within the novel. It was just annoying and I felt the need to slap the inhabitants of the entire village, which they no doubt deserved, but would significantly numb my hand making it gradually less satisfying. And Tobius! What a complete idiot he was. Didn't deserve what he got but still, idiot. I won't be seeking out any more of these books. less

very thrilling story, but for me the end was too complicated - like in a mexican tv series..
