review 1: A TV journalist who investigates contentious issues has a number of enemies. When Hanna Herzman is found brutally beaten in the boot of her car, shortly after the discovery of a young girl’s body in the river, detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein become involved. This story is an intricate weaving of events surrounding various characters. Pia’s schoolfriend Emma who is heavily pregnant and has a small daughter, Louisa, is staying with her husband Florian’s family in a grand estate. Pia’s partner, Christoph has invited his granddaughter Lilly to stay with Pia and himself for a couple of weeks. The events that unfold regarding the TV journlist and Emma’s family spill over and threaten Pia’s own family. Gradually, the connections between the characte... morers become clear, and resolution is in a tense denouement at a large family gathering. Gripping reading.
review 2: The sixth in a series, but only the second translated into English, which explains some of the gaps in the telling. A good enough mystery, although the bad guys become obvious quickly with any kind of attentive reading, and it could have been written more tightly--it seemed overly long. This could be partly the translation, which seemed very wooden much of the time. I hope to read more of this series and get a better idea of how good it is, or isn't. less
