Son premier roman, paru en 2004, Black Dirt figurait sur la liste de l'Orange Prize. Devotion et The Voice ont remporté un franc succès. Publié en 2012, La Couleur du lait l'a consacrée comme un des auteurs importants de notre temps. C'est la première œuvre de Nell Leyshon à être traduite en français.
review 2: I picked this book up the other day having come across it as one of the reading group book collection that I'd never read. It's a short book and the first page had me hooked.The writing style is unusual. The main character, Mary, writes in a flawed first-person narrative like this:i want to tell you what it is that happened but i must be ware not to rush at it like the heifers at a gate for if i do that i will get ahead of myself so quick that i will trip and fall and anyway you will want me to start where a person ought to.This made the tone feel urgent and immediate to me and I found I was wanting to keep reading this book to find out what happened - it only took me two days of commuting to finish it!This style reminded me very much of Alice Walker's The Color Purple and it has a lot in common with that book, using the voice of Mary to position the reader in the place of the oppressed.It's extremely readable (if you don't mind the lack of capitals) and the language is beautiful with some really haunting images. It is an upsetting read which explores some very dark themes. I'm very glad this book is part of the collection and I believe it offers a lot to talk about. less
