review 1: What a chilling, tragic book! It took me quite a while to get into the book, and to adjust to Mary's voice. But it proved masterful in the end--Leyshon does a nice job of revealing the truth in pieces, even as Mary tells her truth as it happens. A chilling end that leaves me disturbed, but also proud of Mary's final empowerment. Her employer was a disturbing man and I wish she stood up for herself earlier, though with her position during that time period she seemed to have no choice. I think the book captivated me in the end.
review 2: I loved this book. The story of Mary during the year she was sent away to work as a servant for the vicor's sick wife. The vicor.s son impregnates the oldest daughter and won't take responsibility. Mary's father sends Mary, the s
... moreecond daughter away to work for the vicor, but the father gets paid not Mary. Mary's father blames everything that goes wrong on their poor farm on not having a son but 3 worthless girls. After the vicor's wife dies Mary is kept on to continue to work, but the vicor starts to take advantage of her. There is a very tragic and emotional ending to this book. But, it is such a satisfying read. less

Gimmicky narration style, but it works. Kinda pulpy yet also a little charming. Good for a bus ride.

This book was told in the voice of a farm girl. It is very unique and a fast read.

Just sad how powerless women were not so long ago in history. Heartbreaking.
