review 1: --ATTENZIONE SPOILER--Stavolta due righe le scrivo perché mi sento quasi in colpa a dare due stelle ad Ammaniti. Ma non ci posso fare niente.Fino a metà, anzi tre quarti del libro, la storia prosegue scorrevole e divertente, si vuole scoprire che fine faranno quelle quattro macchiette dei Satanisti e se lo scrittore riuscirà a "mettere la testa a posto". La festa a Villa Ada non potrebbe costituire un'occasione più (in)felice per l'autore di illustrare la decadenza di Roma e dell'Italia intera. La concentrazione di senzacervello a Villa Ada si fa tale che quasi speri imploda su se stessa all'improvviso. Sono poche le figure realmente positive (e anche loro sono comunque macchiate di negatività): Mantos, che intraprende la sua impresa per pura disperazione e che appare... more come un uomo buono piegato dalla vita; Larita e Silvietta, ben diverse da tutte le altre figure femminili del romanzo; Zombie, la cui umanità ci viene svelata solo quando per lui è arrivata la fine, anzi il cui biglietto d'addio è la dimostrazione del fatto che la poca umanità rimasta al mondo è destinata a soccombere perché nessuno ascolta.Ammaniti si fa delirante nell'ultima porzione del libro, tra l'invenzione dei cavernicoli (chi mai avrebbe acconsentito a vivere e a procreare in situazioni di vita come quelle, comunismo o non comunismo? Improbabile.) e l'inondazione del lago dà l'idea di voler sterminare tutti i personaggi del suo libro senza se e senza ma. E' un peccato perché il libro avrebbe potuto avere una conclusione molto più significativa di una "semplice" catastrofe naturale. Sono una forte sostenitrice del fatto che un lettore dovrebbe sempre analizzare i libri che legge alla ricerca di un messaggio, e non che dovrebbe essere "imboccato". Ma in tale caos di personaggi, eventi, metafore, morti, trovare e sviluppare i giusti spunti di riflessione non è per niente facile. Peccato.
review 2: Niccolo Ammaniti first came into my life through the superb, thrilling novel "I'm not scared" a couple of years ago. The writing was clever, suspenseful and exquisite, the storyline intriguing and surprising. So, as soon as I heard that his latest book had been translated I got myself a copy (this time, on audio, read by the absolutely outstanding Rupert Degas, whose accents and intonations are flawless). Well, if anyone told me that there was a misprint on the cover, and it's in fact written by a different author I'd believe it! It couldn't be more different to "I'm not scared" if it tried! The writing is still clever, but much wittier with lots of absurd dialogue and inner thought processes. The story is told from various people's perspectives in the third person, predominantly by a hen-pecked, spineless accountant who runs a satanic cult behind his wife's back, and secondly by a vain, egocentric writer who is a manipulative strategist in every situation. The book is full of wackos and weirdos, and whilst this is very entertaining, it does get a bit tiring when even as far as chapter 77 (out of about 82) we are introduced to someone else, still. If you enjoy satire, crazy situational comedy, shock value violence and a bunch of flawed but fascinating characters, I'd recommend this to you! less
