Ammaniti exposes the weaknesses, the dreams, and the desires that lead us down the fateful paths we take. Uma história de gente simples com vidas difíceis, contada de uma forma crua, sem qualquer tentativa de adoçar a realidade, por vezes tão dolorosa.Uma história que fala principalmente de homens. Das suas fraquezas, dos seus sentimentos, desejos e desgostos - dissimulados por exibições de força ou adormecidos pelo álcool e pelo sexo.A história de um menino que cresce numa família, sem mãe, e num meio onde impera a violência - talvez como uma forma de sobrevivência - mas no qual o amor e a amizade, pode levar a actos de maior dádiva e generosidade do que se vivesse num ambiente dito adequado/normal.A leitura é estimulante, levando-nos a passar página atrás de página, sem um momento de tédio.

As black and dark a comedy as you are likely to find, this book finds several Italian characters living on the edge of poverty and despair and in one dark, stormy night making decisions that will change their lives forever. Ironically making horrific choices , based on what each believes God has guided him to, none of these people, including the 13 year old protaganist is what they at first seem. An action packed book, that stumbles from one catastrophe to another, this would make an excellent Coen Brothers movie. In Italian, as God commands, also means a thing of beauty, and this book lives up to its title. A 4.5 for sure.
