review 1: A pretty darned cute scrappy kind of novel, which allows Nicholson Baker to just write about about whatever occurs to him, like cigars, the CIA, Quaker meetings, protest songs, being in love with your ex-girlfriend, drones, but mostly Debussy's 'The Sunken Cathedral' - I learned a bunch of stuff. It is brimming with a real love of music, from dance music to the bassoon, and while there is an underlying sadness and rage at life and war and loneliness, it is a happy book. This is Baker at his warmest.

... moreel to this one. Paul Chowder obviously had a history I wasn't aware of... It was a pretty funny read, though, and nice to have some lite fair. I got my copy through a Goodreads giveaway and it came with a cd of the songs from the book. That was a hoot! I may give another of his a try some day, but not sure I would particularly recommend this one. Not to a new Baker reader, anyway. less
