review 1: Where the heck has this book been all my life?! I can't remember a book that I devoured so quickly like I did Embracing Silence. I'm a big NJ Walters fan, but somehow this entire series (Project Alpha) slipped by me.One hundred odd years into the future, and things are bleak. The wealthy live in the "dome", which is a literal dome that covers a city where people prosper with good food, good health, and clean air. Beyond the dome are the less fortunate, who have slipped into a lawless society. Enter our heroine Silence, who lives with a group of rebels (rebelling against the poor treatment of people by the wealthy-elite and the government) lead by Adrian, who found her when she was 12, sick, starved and all alone. Silence knows someone dangerous is prowling around her... more friends, and she plans to find him. What she doesn't expect is to become hunted herself, or to enjoy her capture so much.I love Silence! She's got a great name and a kickass attitude. She loves Adrian like a brother and wants to keep him safe, so finding out who's been following them is her number one priority. When she's captured by Tienan, she doesn't expect to be so attracted to him or to care so much about him. Tienan is a total alpha male. Literally. Created by the government as a super soldier (Project Alpha), he and men like him were supposed to be terminated when the government realized that they couldn't control them like robots and they were too dangerous. Many of the Alphas were destroyed, but some survived and escaped, including Tienan and his friend Logan. When he catches Silence, he plans to torture information about her people out of her and then kill her, but his plans change quickly when he actually comes face to face with her.I love books like this, where the male is all business and death and mayhem until he finds the one woman meant for him. Silence is a perfect heroine, well-balanced between soft and hard, able to seduce or fight, and loyal to her friends. Tienan is uber sexy, with that carved-from-stone physique that one would expect from a perfect soldier, and a chip on his shoulder because of what the government did. But he's flawed, and that's what makes him so irresistible. He jumps to conclusions quickly, something that you might expect from a man that has been treated so badly his whole life.And the sex. Oh my. Hot, hot, hot. Walters never disappoints on the romance front, and the worlds she builds around her characters are believable and detailed. I loved this book so much that I couldn't put it down when I started it and I finished it in one day. And then I picked up the 2nd book immediately and can't wait to get to Logan's story.
review 2: I loved the setting of this book Futuristic/post apocalyptic. Tienan the hero of this book is part cyborg and wonders if he has any humanity left in himself. He meets his girl Silence who is a self reliant girl and falls for her hard. He has a small struggle with trust but, wises up pretty quickly. I look forward to reading more and to seeing how Ms. Walters develops this world and the other characters throughout the series. less
