review 1: A bear clad in a lumberjack hat is trying to fulfill his greatest destiny passed on through the generations. I will not tell you what this destiny is, but in order to accomplish it, he must chop off branches and cut down trees. This becomes problematic for the little community of forest (and non-forest) animals that live under the trees. A deer, a, beaver, an owl, some kind of white bird, a pig, and a curly-headed guy must solve the mystery of where their trees are going! It must not be one of them, because “they all had solid alibis” at the time of the chopping. How will they catch the great paper caper?! This incredibly unique book is a crime investigation story complete with caution tape, accusations, a court trial, and even a suspect line up. Jeffers’ quirky anim... moreals have their usual stick legs and scribbled look. He uses flat and milky colors with scratchy textures overtop that resemble, to me, the color palate used in most of Wes Anderson’s films. The backgrounds vary between simple white with shadow to uniquely colored snowy forest scenes. It is a heartwarming story about making up for your wrongdoings and respecting others and the environment around you.
review 2: One thing came to mind after I finished reading The Great Paper Caper: the book is not only good for children, but also great for those who cut down trees but never replaced them back. In The Great Paper Capers, Oliver Jeffers teaches children just that; we can have fun and all with tree products but we must always make sure to plant them back.Although some think that this book was a let down, I certainly have my own illustrator/writer/reader point-of-view. I thought to myself, “How can I not cleverly think about a picture book like that?” less

My boys (ages 7 and 11) liked the illustrations better than the actual story.
