review 1: definitely not my best reading of 2013... this book was extremely annoying, I couldn't stand the main character nor could I care about the plot. I only forced myself to finish it because I need this for college. but I do believe this hate I have for the book was not the author's fault - the problem is all with this edition. the translation gives the impression of a very lazy and bad writing, and more than once I got confused with what was happening inside the story. reading other reviews concerning this edition, I could see I wasn't the only one to be annoyed at it; also, I heard many good comments and ratings for this book coming from readers that got it in other languages. so, perhaps it was all the translator's fault??well, all I know is that it was one of the most bori... moreng books I read this year, and this only star goes to the fierceful and ironic good comments made about the 1700's French society (that fits for the contemporary as well and for Kolm, the only character that I cared about, and the only one I could see some deepness. I was not amused with his ending...
review 2: I grabbed this book off the new fiction shelf at the library with only moments to choose, and a child running wild in the checkout area. It was interesting, in that it gave a glimpse into the past and illuminated (pun intended) the role and the art of calligraphy and calligraphers. However, the book was downright weird, and was so heavy on the mysterious half-revealed glimpses that I could barely follow the story until I was about two-thirds done and could figure out how it was going to end. A fine, easy read, but not really something I'd recommend. less

A very short novella.Intriguing and entertaining, but somewhat disjointed.

Fun, but surprisingly violent. And everybody died. Gruesomely.

Ugh. So pretentious. Stopped less than 50 pages in.

Dull and dry. What was the mystery?
