review 1: 4.5 Stars! This was another great book by Pamela Clare. When I started this series I wasn't sure if I was going to like books about reporters, but these are great!Kat James is the I team reporter who deals with environmental issues and because she is Native American she also deals with Native American issues for the paper as well. Gabe Rossiter is a ranger who saves Kat when she falls off a cliff. Kat and Gabe meet up again later, when a inipi ceremony Kat is at gets broken up by the police and Gabe shows up to see what is going on. Kat starts to investigate why the Native people are being pushed to stay away from the land where the inipi was held and her life is put in danger. This book has lots of suspense and drew me in fast. These books need to be read in order s... moreo that you can understand how the characters from the other books fit in. I like the fact that Ms. Clare has written these books so that there is an in - depth story. Of course many people don't know much about native customs and it would be easy to gloss over those. Ms. Clare gives us enough information to flesh out the story without overwhelming us.
review 2: ★★★½ \I didn't enjoy this one as much as the prior installments. It was too long or the pace was slow, but the writing was still great. I can tell the author really takes time to research the subjects.Katherine "Kat" James is a member of the Navajo tribe and she is researching the local law enforcement's raid on a sacred Navajo burial site, called Mesa Butte. She interviews a local park Ranger Gabriel Rossiter, and she remembers him as the officer who helped her during a hiking accident a few weeks ago. Discussions between the two showed a mutual respect for Navajo traditions, as well as a budding attraction. The only issue was Kat swore to only give her body to a man who committed himself to her, and Gabe never planned to commit to a woman after the last time ended in betrayal. Are either one of them willing to compromise on their relationship standards in order to see where this thing could go?The story itself wasn't as action packed as the prior stories, so I think that is why I found it slow to develop. But I was often irritated at Gabe's use of physical comfort every time Kat was rattled by something. It was like he was unconsciously trying to get her to have a taste of sex, so she could be tempted to sleep with him, without the commitment she desired. His treatment of his side piece Samantha was appalling to me. True, Samantha could have benefitted from some self-respect, pride and dignity, but there was no reason to be that cruel.Sam was doing the same thing Kat ended up doing, which was mistaking physical intimacy with emotional intimacy. I didn't agree with the author's assertion that Gabe's actions spoke louder than words. He may say he doesn't want a relationship, but his actions shows he really cares about Kat. That's a bad motto when it comes to sex, love and commitment. The words and actions need to be congrious or you will end up with people really pissed off like Sam. I am glad it worked out but that aspect of this story really interfered with my enjoyment. So I was leery of Gab and Kat until the end. less
