review 1: I need to preface this review by stating I won this book in one of the giveaways. I hadn't read any other books in this series, but was extremely excited when a signed copy of A LOVE UNTAMED arrived. Pamela was so generous in sending book marks, a personal note inside the book itself & a another personal card along with it. Her kindness to take the time to add those personal touches was truly heartwarming & I'm thankful to have been So lucky! Now as far as the book is concerned, I absolutely loved it as I began reading. I could hear Kieran's sexy accent as I read the words & although I had my doubts about just how sexy he could stay as a fox Pamela did not disappoint me. I could see the story play out like a movie in my head from the first few pages, something that is not ... moreas common as it should be. Each character appeared with complete uniqueness one by one. The perfect description of the Ilinas made them vivid in my minds eye. How beautiful Melisande must be even with her cold warrior exterior. The beauty that Ms Palmer brings to the love story that is Fox & Melisande is remarkable. I will admit I'd gotten impatient waiting for the moment that these two came together, but it was indeed worth the wait. The details are sweet, spicy & completely ill timed as most paranormal encounters should be. When I finally began reading thru those pages I felt a great sense of accomplishment for those two characters. Being unfamiliar with this series, I only had this books' descriptions to connect with each character, which may have put me at a slight disadvantage. Even with that however, I quickly fell in love with parts of all of them including Grizz & his constant snarling at the world. Kara is brought to life with magnificent description fitting her perfectly as the light, kind, warm & lovely "radiant" she is & ferals are each given their own distinction highlighting the pros & cons of their own unique characters. This is all done with smooth & hypnotizing story telling that allows a reader to merge directly into this world with ease. That said, the deeper I sank into this story the more I found some of its descriptions slightly repetitive & less engaging. Not of the characters themselves, but of their dialogue & actions. Also this story definitely has a few dark underlines. One of these is understandable due to the building of connection to a main character. You need this information, no matter the difficulty of knowing it, to sympathize with Melisande & truly get to know how she became who she is. The other? I'm not convinced the other dark portion was a necessity. Yes it was hit on briefly & yes it answered a pertinent question, but as a mother who enjoys paranormal romance for entertainment it felt unnecessary. I think there were better explanations for what had occurred than the disturbing turn the story was allowed to take. No matter how brief the point is made. It still makes a point & it left me with a sickened feeling for the rest of the book. This is my personal opinion & may not affect every reader the way it did me. These points did not ruin the story for me but did take away from it slightly. I still wish to read more into this series in hopes that the beginning books are as engaging as this one without the more disturbing portions. All in all an extremely well woven tale. The characters are exciting & well placed. The description of each locale is detailed & well written. Pamela Palmer is generous, imaginative, & an incredible weaver of adventure, suspense, & seduction. Thank you to her for all of that. I'll certainly be checking out the rest of this series and I'll most definitely keep going feral!
review 2: I do not read this series on a regular basis and in order which may affect me a bit in how I enjoyed this book. However, as a stand alone, I felt no connection between Fax and Melisande, and other than the magical connection making them mated did not see why they would be together. I give the author a bonus point for going out side of the box and providing a different sort of plot with several of the good guys doing through a labyrinth to find their missing radiant. Where I thought the story was lacking is that the author doesn't explore anything other than Fox and Melisande's journey which wasn't that complicated or adventurous. She doesn't explain what and why the Mages are doing what they are doing (they're just "bad"). She also just abandons Grizz and we don't find out what happens to him (yes, maybe that's the next book, but to just drop it half way through?)She doesn't go into the testing done on the new ferals, just mentions some pass and some didn't. What did they do? How did they not pass?If this was the first book I'd read by Palmer, I wouldn't continue with the series and as is, it will be something I just happen to pick up when in the library, walking by and spontaneously picking up. less
