review 1: Awesome world building, literally mind blowing. I didn't really catch any info-dumping at all, and the entire world was constructed in a way that felt very natural and organic, even though the world itself was a total disaster area. Oh, and I loved the language the characters used - the slang didn't feel forced, and while it was clearly different, it wasn't jarringly incomprehensible, as is often the case. The main issue I had was with the plot, which was rather obvious. It was pretty predictable, and I think there were many more interesting avenues that could have been explored, only if the characters had been a bit more complicated. *******SPOILER ALERT******* For example, Captain Candless??? I mean, c'mon, that was way too easy. Oh, hooray!! Good guy who is completely an... mored utterly loyal and will absolutely never betray anyone to the point where I felt like he was as boring as wallpaper?? He was just, argh, immediately there. BOOM - good guy we can trust. I just found him unrealistic and annoying. I sincerely have no idea how/why he and his crew were so devoted to Nita to the point that they would risk their lives for her? I mean, wasn't she just some swank daughter of the swank man they worked for? WHERE IS THE LOGIC???Okay, that rant turned out larger than I expected. Then again, I really did enjoy it (4 stars, hello???). It was a quick, fun read that brought up some interesting dynamics and questions in terms of life and loyalty. Sorry, I do realise that seems a bit broad. And also the ending???? Wrapped up wayyyyy to quickly for me, in the idea of literal length. It finished very quickly in a few pages??? I needed a bit more than that, and it stopped in a pretty mediocre spot, tbh. Reading back over this review, I've realized I'm sort of just moaning about stuff I didn't like, when there was a whole lot I did like. I liked some of the characters a lot (PIMA!!! I wanted more of Pima), and the world building was stunning. I'm definitely up for reading the next book.
review 2: 5 starsTotally enthralled by this book and the writing. It’s one I had to reread. It is well paced from Nailer falling into the oil and facing death to the end with the battle of the ships against the Teeth. The dystopian world-building is incredible as I can imagine it and the descriptions are concise. It is a world where the seas have risen and there are the Haves and the Have-nots (people v/s the corporations –which is true even today…) There are some snags: how did Richard Lopez know where Nailer and the girl were hiding? Was Pima or the mother tortured? But this book is so well written that the few questions raised in my head are easily swept away. The events happen AFTER those of Drowned Cities and have some bits about what happens to Tool after he defeats the General.Highly recommended and a treasure to revisit. less
