review 1: Because this was a free download for me, I had low expectations. The beginning was slow and there were a few confusing spots that I had to reread to get the whole picture. However, I was completely drawn in. This is one of my favorite time periods to read because of personal stories I've heard from my parents and grandparents. The gradual maturing of the main character is slow and hard to read emotionally, but Hickman does a great job of helping you feel with this child the hardship she endures. There are many sad moments, but that's what I appreciate about this book. Life can be sad for many. You will fall in love with the garden and long to have a similar refuge in your life. You will also pray for friends like the friends displayed in this book. Because of Tiny Dancer, ... moreI will read Hickman again.
review 2: I liked this book. I will admit that I like a lot more dialogue between the characters and less of the main characters thinking, and it was slow at first. But after several chapters I got hooked. I loved the main character, Flannery, and getting inside her brain made it interesting. There was a lot going on in this book, and several things really took me by surprise. Flannery and her sister, Siobhan were young dancers, and her stepmother had huge plans for them but not all of our plans come out the way we expect. This was a endearing coming-of-age story that kept me interested until the end. less
