review 1: I've never seen an author get so much hate for taking his time to write a great book. All of you people insulting Patrick for taking three years to write a book...Jesus, could you be anymore entitled? Are you new to reading or something? Let's look at some other popular fantasy series that have had long delays between their novels. (George not included)~Gentleman Bastard by Scott Lynch: Six years between books two and three.~Exiles by Melanie Rawn: SEVENTEEN years between books two and three.~The Dark Tower by Stephen King: (You'll like this one. Let's do the years he released them) 1982, 1987, 1991, 1997, 2003. ~Harry Potter by Duh: Three years between books four and five. While that might seem like much, she had the entire world frothing at the mouth for OotP.~Dune by Fr... moreank Herbert: 1965, 1969, 1976 etc.~Inheritance Cycle: Three years between books two and three/three and four.Wow. That's some pretty exclusive company up there, isn't it? Let me also remind you that none of those books were as long as either of Pat's books.I admit, I get frustrated sometimes when I hear the author is going to his thirtieth convention of the year instead of doing some writing, but that's only because I've become so immersed in his world that I'm desperately eager to find out what's going to happen next. I get over it. It's his life, he's earned it, and we as the readers have no right to tell him what to do, nor should we get pissed at him when his writing speed isn't up to our standards. Don't give me that "Oh, but I paid for my copy, he owes it to me." No, he doesn't owe you shit. Buying a movie ticket doesn't give you the right to walk into the theater and piss on the projector. Paying for cable doesn't mean you get to choose the Friday night line-up. So what makes you think that you have the right to personally insult this man because you have to wait a few years for a book that will probably knock our socks off? "But... but... he said the series was already done." Okay. Stories change sometimes. New characters are created. New ideas spawn in your head. Revisions are made. Rewrites are done. And not everyone is a robot like Brandon Sanderson, as awesome of a robot as he is.Anyway, I doubt my words will persuade you, but after reading all of these posts attacking the man's character, I had to step in and say something. He's such a terrible, terrible man, you say? He doesn't care about us, you cry? When is the last time you managed to spearhead a charity that donates over half-a-million dollars a year? I'll take the satisfaction of knowing a hundred more people in the world are getting a second chance at life over a new book every year. Also, a theory to leave with you. I believe Puppet, the loopy man living in the archives, is actually Teccam. Earlier in the series, it's noted that "Hollows was simple and square, with stained glass windows showing Teccam in a classic pose: standing barefoot in the mouth of his cave, speaking to a group of students.” Teccam also appears in Hespe's story of Iax, though not by name. He is barefoot, living in a cave, and he gives a lesson to Iax on listening. Well, Puppet gives a similar lesson to Kvothe, doesn't he?Think about it. Puppet is obviously older than he looks. He knows the exact spot of specific books in the archives, which is basically impossible, given the size. He's the only person Master Lorren allows to have candles. His residency would imply that Lorren knows who Puppet is, giving the Amyr supporters another theory about Lorren's connection. It would also explain why all the books on the Amyr are missing from the archives.
review 2: There are sufficient accurate reviews that rightly assess this series as well-written, telling an interesting story in a richly imagined world. HOWEVER. If you are the sort who dislikes being strung along for years with possibly no conclusion in sight for the story you have invested in as a reader, then STAY AWAY FROM THIS SERIES. It was a planned trilogy but the third book may never see the light of day. I can only in good conscience recommend you AVOID spending time with this series until there is a published conclusion. less
