review 2: There were parts of this book that I really liked, and other portions not so much. Patrick Smith inarguably gives an insider's perspective on all things related to the airline industry. Some of these topics were rather fascinating, like the hurdles a pilot must get past in order to become a captain, and the rather crappy pay rates that accompany that hierarchical climb. However, there were plenty of other parts of the book where Smith goes off on tedious minutia related to the business. For example, he spends an incredible amount of time ranting about airline logos, slogans, fleet paint jobs, etcetera. There are similar tirades on airport architecture, commercial jet design aesthetics (or lack thereof), and plane manufacturer model numbering schemes. To say that Smith gets out into the geekish tedium of his trade at times is an understatement. I think the book overall would have been stronger if some of those musings were edited down.In other reviews of this book, I have seen readers say things along the lines of "I am a frequent flyer, so I did not learn too much from this book." I'm going to have to cry "bullshit" on that. I do not care how many flights you travel on, there are a lot of things that go on in the cockpit and behind the scenes that travelers just are not privy too. In my opinion, even the most seasoned traveler will learn something from this book; my only complaint is wading through all of the tedious rants to get to those insights. less
