review 1: While I felt enlightened by the sociological, medical and historical insights offered in this book, I have to confess that I agree with the member in our book club who said, “It was a book that was easy to put down”. People in our book club rated the book between a 2 and a 4. I am rating it a 3. Reading other reviews seemed to confirm for me that having the benefit of the earlier books in the series probably would have created a deeper connection with Patrick Taylor’s storytelling and characters. I just can’t relate to the goodreads’ reviewer who claimed that the book was like “comfort food” to them.I discovered only at the end of the book that we were equipped with a glossary, which had I noted earlier, may have helped me better follow the local dialect. ... more But truth be known, I rather enjoyed that the language was somewhat coded. It seemed to soften the use of four letter words. Jenny’s reality as a “woman doctor” was well depicted. It is good for us to remember how women of a previous generation carved the way for professional women today. Things I liked about the book… At one point there is a reflection on the hope that infections will someday be treatable - which is realized in the years outlined through this story. Fingal O’Reilly wrestles with the enormity of need and helps us consider those factors that make choices discernable for each of us. Enduring love is reignited after years of separation. The actualization of medical dreams that literally changed the world! But as one of our book club member commented, the book seemed more like a series of short stories that didn’t necessarily connect.
review 2: I always enjoy Patrick Taylor's books but this one made me pretty homesick. Dr Frank Pantridge is mentioned in it, and my Husband trained under him. He had the worlds first coronary ambulance,, known as the cardiac flying squad and also the first portable defibrillator. Professor McAfee, Gavin Boyd and Grahme Harley are all mentioned, I worked with all three in Royal Maternity Hospital and Grahme delivered our first child. Gavin Boyd did innovative work using hyponosis in childbirth, even using it in C sections less
