review 1: If you enjoy reading memoirs, this is a good one. Fidel Castro is coming to power as this book begins, when the author is around 12 years old and living in Cuba. He tells about his family, school, and later his military service and how a lot of the people felt. Some were for Castro, some were not. You find out what life was like for people living there as Castro imposed new laws one after another. The book also is filled with suspense as he and others try to escape. I believe it is a very truthful memoir.
review 2: The author calls this book a "true-life novel." It is based on the life story of Frank Mederos, a young man from Cuba who despised the policies of the Castro regime. He fell in love with a young girl who, with her family, emigrated to the Unite
... mored States. Frank determined to follow them. The book then follows the attempts he made to escape his homeland and join his fiancee in the United States. The author fictionalized some descriptions and dialogues and, therefore, calls it a true-life novel rather than a biography. One man's description of the Castro regime. less
