review 1: I'm not usually a big fan of the London-fetishizing urban fantasy sub-genre. Possibly it's just because I'm not a Londoner and find the capital irredeemably awful, but too much of it reads like a vaguely jingoistic retread of Neverwhere, a book I didn't much like in the first place. I'd liked Cornell's Dr Who novels so finally got round to trying this, and I'm glad I did. It finally takes the sub-genre out of Neverwhere's shadow and is a great page-turner in its own right. Yes, it gets a little bit C. S. Lewisy towards the end, and not in a good way, but for the most part I thoroughly enjoyed it.
review 2: This is a procedural detective story where an alternative London bursts on the scene and needs to be taken into account. We and the detectives don't really k
... morenow what's going on so we find out together during this story (ie no wise teacher/mentor to explain things). It's also a serial killer story so I do have my usual reservations about that (the stories that focus more on the killer and the people getting killed are just necessary props because it's a serial killer story). I really liked the idea and implication of 'remembering', and I will pick up book 2 if I see it anywhere as the characters were interesting enough for me to know what happens next. less
