review 1: Good second book in this series, about four members of the London police department who have "the Sight," the ability to see under the facade of reality and glimpse some of the magical underpinnings, etc. Cornell does a really good job of showing them learning as they go, not always sure what to make of some of the weird (and often scary) things happening to them and around them. This time out, they're trying to trace the source of an ethereal "Jack the ripper" creature who appears, moves through walls (or closed car doors), kills its prey, and then vanishes. Only this time, its prey seems to consist primarily of wealthy, upper class, white men. The members of the team are all well-drawn and one of them makes a rather foolish (and ultimately, sad) sacrifice to try to get h... moreer hands on a magical device that might assist her in resurrecting her father. Really enjoyed this book.
review 2: I wanted to like this book more than I did. When i attended Loncon3 earlier this year I met Paul Cornell briefly and his is a really nice man. After that meeting I bought his book. I had loved the work he did on Doctor Who and looked forward to the book. It did have some great parts. For instance the start and I was really surprised by some of the things that happened in the second half. The problem for me was that the text was to condense and it took a long time to finish. I usually read very fast but had to slow down if I wanted to keep up with the story. I have heard that the first book was better and might read it someday. It was an OK book with interesting ideas (although I have to note that I getting a bit tiered of Jack the Ripper stories). less

This is a great book that has a Gaiman/Neverwhere connection. This has no sophomore jinx!

Pacing a bit off at the start of the book, but picks up significantly in the second half.

One of the more real-feeling urban fantasies I've come across.
