review 1: The Orange Houses by Paul Griffin is the story of Tamika Sykes. This girl is hearing impaired due to Meningitis which she had when she was five. During the book, she is attending high school at West Bronx High School and her daily life consists of reading lips and she also earns money by selling homework answers. She doesn’t have any friends at all until she meets Fatima. Fatima is a refugee who sells newspapers. Soon enough, these girls become best friends and end up forming another friendship with Jimmi who is a homeless veteran. These three work hard to change their community in the Orange Houses. I really love the fact that the author chose completely different characters in order to form a special bond because many times we become friends with people who are com... morepletely different than us but they also end up being the greatest friendships because the best things come unexpected. There is a huge revelation in the beginning of the book which makes you want to read quickly to figure out what happened but overall, it’s a fantastic story.
review 2: This novel intertwines the lives of three teenagers living in the projects of the Bronx, New York. They all have experience hardship in their lives and must face adversity in the communities in which they are outcasts. Through Art they find their escape and the thing in common that ties all three characters together. This book can relate to some teenagers who are experiencing some of these troubles in their lives, if not someone else’s. It is very well intended for Young-Adults and has some context that younger reader would not understand like drugs. In regards to the style of the book, this book was very interesting; it began with the ending of the book and then progressed to the beginning. The reader knew beforehand how the book was going to end; I guess the quote, “don’t spoil the ending” does not apply here. I personally did not like this approach, as the ending of a book is what keeps me intrigued. less
