review 1: I knew I couldn't expect a happy ending from Paul Torday it never was how he seemed to work. I guess like life, in a lot of ways his endings are more realistic and give you food for thought. I largely enjoyed this book - I like to read stories that explain at least partially why people commit the crimes they do or at least make you think that there are often reasons behind it. It is well-written and you could imagine meeting the characters in real life, they have the same flaws and inconsistencies that real people do. It made me question the justice system since the way the police/home secretary behave is how I can imagine them behaving in real life. Ignoring the obvious because they don't want to risk it being known they could ever do anything wrong. I wonder if GM had su... morervived if they would have just let him free again to walk the streets and kill more innocent children simply because there wasn't enough evidence. The book made me think about a lot of issues. I found Paul Torday's notes in the back - especially the fact he gets so frustrated with atheists because they think they can explain everything but they can't necessarily. Essentially atheism is a belief in itself. In short, it was an enjoyable book. It made me think and not necessarily about things I'd like to.
review 2: Not for the faint of heart but an excellent book nontheless. I can truly say I have not read a book like this; a book where I simultaneously wanted to stop reading and HAD to find out the end. I wanted to stop reading only because the talented way the author makes you grieve for the children and families involved and feel revulsion for the serial killer he describes with truly frightening clarity. But this tale, and it is incredibly unusual, will reward you in the end with a masterful ending. I can't say much abut the book without spoilers but Torday is a great writer of atmosphere, character and plot. This is the kind of book you will find yourself shivering over days after you have finished it. Highly recommended. Shudder. less
