review 1: Washer's list has some valuable points and some weaker ones. I will say that a little cursory editing would be in order, considering that it is being handled as a book, but the various speech-to-text grammatical anomolies were not overly disruptive to the work as a whole. His points on regeneration and the "sinner's prayer" were astute. "The Scripture does not say that Jesus Christ came to the nation of Israel and said that 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, now who would like to ask me into their hearts? I see that hand.' "Boy, that made me laugh out loud, although it's not really funny. Washer compares the practice of leading people in the sinner's prayer to infant baptism. I think he's absolutely right in doing so. We have far too casual an attitu... morede about coming to Christ, and we tend to distill it into something formulaic for the sake of evangelism. I also felt that, while his arguments were insightful, his argument was muddied with a slightly ego-centric bent. "why is it that evangelism and missions and so called church growth is more shaped by the anthropologist, the sociologist and the Wall Street student who is up on every cultural trend? All the activity in our church must be based upon the Word of God, all the activity in missions upon the Word of God. Our missionary activity, our church activity, everything we do ought to flow from the theologian and the exegete, the man who opens up his Bible and only has one question. What is thy will, oh God?"On one hand, he rightly calls out the error of churches placing too much importance on fad programs to evangelize. As much as we say "Sola Scriptura," we often act as though we don't believe the Scriptures are enough to drive the growth of the Church. Washer makes this his first point, but immediately after impugning the necessity of anthropologists and sociologists, he nominates none other than the PREACHER to fill the slot of guy-who-will-make-up-for-the-deficiencies-of-Scripture. It's unfortunate, but a lot of these guys fall into that trap. I half considered going back through this and counting all the little plugs for preacherdom sprinkled throughout the text simply because they were so numerous, but it seemed a little ridiculous.
review 2: This is a short book that reads as if it hasn't been edited since being preached. It seems to be the sermon word-for-word.I have given it five stars not because it is a brilliant book but because it is important. As the title implies, Washer raises ten issues that he believes have gone terribly wrong in the modern church. The book is a call to return to being a biblically faithful church. Those issues are:1. a denial of the sufficiency of scripture2. an ignorance of God3. a failure to address man's malady4. an ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ5. an unbiblical gospel invitation6. an ignorance regarding the nature of the church7. a lack of compassionate church discipline8. a silence on separation9. a replacement of the scriptures regarding the family10. pastors malnourished in the Word of God less
