review 1: Not bad, not great. There is some very nice writing here, with the author being especially good at place description. The dialogue, on the other hand, is repetitive and tiring, especially in the latter scenes between the main protagonist and antagonist. Yikes. The scenes describing magic were sort of cheesy. Don't tell me people are spinning through the air and shooting fire at each other, okay? Just don't. But like I said, a lot of the writing is good. The main character is likable even if she is a little naive (despite being hundreds of years old). The anagram thing (if you read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about) seems cheap. If I were trying to conceal my identity, I'd do more than rearrange the letters in my name. Just sayin'.
review 2: The book
... moreis basically a recounting of the protagonist's many lives as a witch. She started out as Bess Hawkins, but once transformed into a witch due to unforeseen (the bubonic plague) and somewhat foreseen (inevitable witch hysteria), she is forced to run away. While on the run, she does manage to find purpose in her many lives, with one end all be all goal in her life. It's a straightforward book, organized in an easy to read and straightforward manner. The different lives are separated by what is happening in her current life, but the breaks never occur in the middle of one life making which allows for the story to feel continuous. Bess's story and her lives are the focus, but they only give you an idea of some of the events that shaped her life and who she is. These same stories leave you wondering what else happened in between these particular lives. Not to mention, there is no back story or development to give you insight into any of the other characters. Overall, I found the book very enjoyable and pleasant. I found Bess with her guarded nature interesting a character. Her lives were intriguing, and I appreciated the incorporation of well-known historical events as part of her story to offer a bit of realism. This book is a book in a long while that I have been able to actually finish in a timely manner because of a character's compelling story. less
