review 1: This book had it's moments and I enjoyed the little details, but the story (or multiple stories within the primary story) were too repetitive and predictable for me. To be fair, I was looking for magical realism and instead stumbled across this - which was more gothic melodrama to me than anything else. So it's not entirely fair to judge a book for not being the thing you were looking for. I think I just made a poor choice and I'm sure it would better please a reader who was more interested in this style.
review 2: Probably a 2.5 really. The sections dealing with Bess's life in various times: the 1600s, where she lost her family to plague and became a witch at the hands of Gideon Masters; Jack the RIpper's London and World War 1 were quite interesting. These we
... morere interspersed with a spare contemporary story where Bess reinvents herself yet again by moving into a small rural village in order to escape Gideon's lustful pursuit of her. Against her better judgement, she is befriended by a lonely local girl and begins to teach Tegan the ways of the craft. The story's biggest flaw to me was the oversimplification of the emotions of the characters. There was no emotional complexity and the settings and plot were too stereotypical of the genre to be truly gripping. less
