review 1: It was a very good book with a lot of things to learn. But through all this, I don't think I'll be able to remember everything but I think something assured me that I can walk a path that will lead me to something really good. This book has taught me a lot of things. It has also cleared me of some my worries. I'm very grateful to have read this book. I wish not only me but a lot of person was able to see a new light in the world because of thi. I also found out what was wrong in Veronika's thinking (Veronika decides to die).
review 2: I decided to try to complete the Richmond Public Library adult summer reading program which meant reading one book representing each of the 7 continents. I’m not sure this was a really good choice for that project, but it was at
... more least a quick and satisfying read. And it sure didn’t hurt that Jeremy Irons narrated it. His voice had the right mix of heft and lightness to make it all easy listening. The premise of the book is easy enough, a researcher has found the record of a discourse between a mysterious wise man known only as The Copt and the people of Jerusalem, preparing to flee the city in 1099. By layering the story inside another story Coelho puts enough distance between the wise man’s statements and our own lives to buy the credibility of his pronouncements. Which is probably a good thing because the thing could otherwise seem fairly didactic. Which is not a good thing particularly when the content is so ordinary. Really there is nothing revolutionary in this book. But in truth I liked listening to these little morals even if they were not particularly illuminating. There was something about taking 5 to 10 minutes here to get through another fable and then using it as a way of focusing my attention for the day. Maybe if I had read this at a time of my life that was less chaotic or disrupted I would not have appreciated the mini-lectures. But given what my life looked like while I read this, it was a good fit. less
