review 1: There is so much to think about in this book. Having raised three boys and two girls (and being a girl myself) I could see a lot of truth in the book. Shorter recess times, more expectation that a child will sit still for long periods, less tolerance for any appearance of violence, more expectations of neatness and organization, an emphasis on literature over informational books, few male teachers in the field have all added up to many boys giving up on school early and never rethinking that decision. There is a lot that can be changed fairly easily (without shortchanging girls), if we only consider these observations and make small changes.
review 2: This book was backed up by careful documentation and it was absolutely heart-wrenching. I have two boys and
... more just talking about these issues brought tears to my eyes. It confirmed an uneasy feeling I had about my oldest son's education when he stopped wanted to attend preschool after several months. Three years later and he still has issues with the idea of attending school. I knew something was wrong but now I have a much better idea of what. Along with information on the problem, the author gives ideas for teachers and parents to work on the problem now - if one finds there is a problem in their particular school. I was quite grateful for a list of warning signs in the conclusion: "Watch out for boys who complain they are bored or afraid to go to school. Watch out for teachers who complain that boys are too active, who clamp down on boys' fantasy play, who allow boys to languish in reading and writing, who chastise boys for poor organization or bad handwriting. These are signs that your son may be in a school that doesn't respect him or that even discriminates against him."Strong words. But necessary. If our girls were having this much trouble, there would be hue and cry and outrage. As the author says, "We need to find ways to help all our children succeed." less

Thought provoking stuff, but very dry and repetitive. A chore to finish.

Good material but I think it needs more suggestions for solutions.
