review 1: The physical setting of this novel is dismayingly bleak, which matches the lives of most of the characters. The action is disjointed as the chronology jumps back and forth, with essential details often coming later than one might wish. I was disappointed with the character development, not finding the characters real enough to empathize with. It suffered in comparison to the Ivan Doig novel I was reading at the same time. Other than these issues, it is a interesting read, seeming to depict life in the North country about a century ago quite authentically.
