review 1: Dry Bones is also published as Extraordinary People and is the first in a series featuring the Scottish Italian biologist detective Enzo McLeod living in France. McLeod is on the trail of a cold case, the disappearance of the brilliant professor Jacques Gaillard. The case leads him to the literal underworld of Paris, the catacombs which lie beneath the sewer system.McLeod has two daughters - one from his first marriage, and from whom he is estranged. The second is his daughter by his second wife who died in child birth. Another detective with a dysfunctional family life. I like this character and am likely to continue reading his further adventures. Peter May, the author, is the Scottish author of one of my favorite series about the Outer Hebrides island(s) of Harris and ... moreLewis.
review 2: I started this book with a bit of trepidation, having read and enjoyed the Lewis trilogy, but hated and nearly didn't finish the dire Entry Island. However I liked the cover and anyone who spends some time on the selecting a decent cover must have some redeeming qualities. I know that's a bit daft, but I used to buy LPs (yes, LPs, not CDs) on that basis and I have listened to some brilliant music as a result - but also some real dogs. However, I digress.I liked the story set in Paris and the conflict between himself and his families (divorced + remarried). I liked the logical progression through the case from a non-police perspective. What I didn't like was the leaps of faith that took him from one fact to a conjecture that he then took as solid fact. This seemed to contradict the previous logic. I didn't enjoy the final chapters, I won't give anything away here, I just didn't like it.All in all, it's a good tale, generally well told with a few red herrings and cul-de-sacs along the way. In my opinion it was much more interesting than Entry Island which is the last of his books I read, but not nearly as good as the Lewis Trilogy. Middle ground, not extraordinary. less
