review 1: Really enjoyed this combination of crime novel and historical saga. Sime McKenzie works for the Canadian Surete and is part of a team sent to an isolated island at the mouth of the St. Lawrence to investigate the murder of its richest inhabitant. The immediate suspect is the victim's wife Kirsty but, when Sime first meets her, he is sure he knows her from somewhere. The murder investigation is interspersed with Sime's recollections of his family's past - his ancestors lived on the Western Isles but were 'cleared' in the 19th century during the potato famine - as told to him as a child by his grandmother reading from old diaries. As the investigation progresses, there appear to be some links between Sime's past and Kirsty's. How these come about you will have to read the bo... moreok to find out. Great read - 8.5/10.
review 2: I was really disappointed in this one - I had so enjoyed Peter May's Lewis trilogy, and this is his first book since that one. But I found myself skimming, not finding the characters or plot believable at all. The book jumps back and forth between the two stories (one present-day in Quebec, the other in the 1800s in the Hebrides) which I just found awkward. And the linkage of the two stories - as the fulfillment of a promise made two centuries ago - was just too romance-y for me. (I should have been warned by the slogan on the front cover..."where destiny waits.") less

gahhh
Not quite as good as the lovely Lewis trilogy, in fact the plot is quite clichéd. An average read.

It's not often that I am kept in suspense 'til the very end of the book! A compelling read.
