review 1: A murder in Edinburgh. A murder on a remote island off the northern coast of Scotland. Same MO. Is there a link? Fin, a detective, is sent back to the Isle of Lewis, where he was born and raised, to see if there is any connection. But the tiny village, his hometown, is full of memories...and most of them are not pleasant ones. How did he parents die? What happened to his childhood mates? And, what of the little girl he fell in love with when he was a wee lad? And what about the corpse on the Isle of Lewis...it happens to be the town bully who made everyone's childhood a nightmare. There isn't a person on the Isle who isn't gad that Angel is dead...but who did it?The setting is shrouded in the fog of Scotland's north coast. The main characters, for the most part, are th... moreose poor blokes who stayed in the village of their birth, carrying on age-old traditions. Fin, of course, escaped the Isle and became a cop. There is a long section of the annual hunting of the nesting birds that taught me more than I really wanted to know. But, overall, this book was a page-turner filled with atmosphere, memories, lost loves, friends and enemies.And, murder.
review 2: I loved the locale and the mystery itself. There was a lot of description that I skimmed over as I found it redundant and I thought that the 'flashback technique' was used too many times. Using the first person voice to do this flashback didn't make sense to me until the end, it was a great denouement. The last paragraph was really unrealistic. But, saying that, I'm going to try the second book. less
