review 1: I would say there was less to this story than the other Demon Cycle short story, "Brayan's Gold", and for a while "The Great Bazaar" feels like nothing more than a cut section of The Warded Man. However, the ending throws a fun curveball or two which help the story achieve closure and stand on its own, ultimately putting the tale a little ahead of "Brayan's Gold" in my estimation. Plus, "The Great Bazaar" gives us more Abban. I hadn't taken much notice of him in The Warded Man, but this story establishes him as an interesting character and I now look forward to seeing more of him in the coming books.By the way, if you're a Demon Cycle fan and you're hitting up these sidestories to scratch some sort of completist itch, I would recommend visiting Peter V. Brett's "Peephole i... moren my Skull" website. It has all the bonuses included in this ebook (other than The Great Bazaar itself), and much more, including a free short story from Arlen's childhood, many deleted scenes from The Warded Man, a couple cuttings from The Desert Spear, a lone excision from The Daylight War, and even a preview of The Skull Throne.
review 2: Great escape into the world ravaged by the demons :)Loved this interlude - basically setting up a gold-heart character Abban for us; When Peter V Brett broke into the epic fantasy scene with the "Warded Man" - People couldn't get enough of the wonderful world he painted. Man vs Nature, Man vs Evil - Here, Arlen the Messenger armed with Magical Wards against the Demons -> simple concept really but Brett drove it home with some tense action-packed character-driven narrative that was a rip-roaring celebration of everything Fantasy. Here he takes a break - gives us those "Extras" - scenes that were edited and cut out from the main narrative. Basically the years before Arlen becomes obsessed with the lost city where he could gain those wards to fight off the demons. Tight narrative, no sweeping plots here - focused clearly on a linear narrative around a specific event in Arlen's life and introducing us to the interesting character of Abban. Job well done. Though it still feels like it's like a taster; basically a Hors d'oeuvre served to keep us happy before the Desert Spear and now of course with the DayLight War, Brett has upped the narrative to whole new level. But hell, I enjoyed this light tasty appetizer. I wasn't too impressed with the debut, I felt he had sacrificed depth for the sakes of an jet-setting pace. Anyways, I might be tempted to dig back for the rest of the spread now. less
