review 1: This book is undeniably written very well. The entire series is quite good too. Probably the best thing about this book, which is also a testament to the author's skill, is that he was able to take characters and even the entire notion of the Krasian culture, make me hate them, and then twist it so that by the end I felt endeared to them. I particularly love the idea of dual and competing "saviors". Where at first I thought one had to be an impostor, by the end it really wasn't all that clear. My biggest beefs were with the obsession of the Krasians with sexuality and debasement of women, class structures, etc (though where initially I felt this to be a reflection of the author, by the end he had convinced me that it was intentional that I be bothered, so that I could ... moreend up seeing the redemption of the culture by the end). Also, the book ended in a literal cliffhanger, which usually is a horrible idea for any book, but in this case was not horrible, just a bit eye rolling. Overall, well done and I have continued high hopes for the series.
review 2: This is a hard one. I feel like the author delved into more of the depraved side of humanity, especially with respect to sexual relations (male/female, male/male, and female/female).Also, although in some sense it is kind of intriguing to read the back-stories for various people, and while it gives a bit of another dimension to them (i.e., he wasn't really bad when he did this, or she really had his best interest in heart when she cheated on him), I honestly wonder whether this was all thought out before-hand or if the author is re-writing scenes retroactively. Regardless, as the reader, I feel a little cheated when I'm led to believe one thing and then told something that completely negates what I thought two books down the road. I'm also increasingly disgusted by Leesha, who started out wanting to preserve her virginity for her husband and now appears to be acting the town whore, even sleeping with a count to hide the fact that she became pregnant by some other guy.I don't like Renna. She's really on the verge of insanity and can barely control her lusts.I thought it was really weird that Rojer could manipulate corelings to do whatever he wanted them to do ("beat that coreling there with a stick", "walk around on your hands") but not by changing tunes, but by changing the way he's playing the tune or weaving other melodies in. It just stretched the bounds of plausibility, even in this world.Nevertheless, there were some really neat concepts in this book: the mind demons and their abilities are terrifying. Kaji's spear and crown are really neat artifacts, and I am glad it moved more to man against corelings, rather than man against man. less

This book is like 65% sex scenes, but the series is utterly compelling.
