review 1: I wanted to like this book, I really did. But I found it disappointing pretty much all the way through. The plot was slightly murky--not really hard to understand, just a little bit. But this is the type of book that should be a story, not an art piece, so I don't think it was intentionally murky. It just didn't tie together that well. I would have liked more vivid descriptions of the environment where the boys lived, and the character development took almost the whole book to really pick up, so I didn't feel that invested in the characters. I found it hard to understand their motivations. The premise was interesting but the book was just disappointing.
review 2: *I won this book in a GoodReads First Reads Giveaway*I'm a little torn with this book. The premise
... moreis fairly decent - a dystopian future where genetic testing has been made mandatory. Boys found to have the "bad genes" proven to be associated with criminal behavior are taken from their parents and forced into boarding schools for rehabilitation and reprogramming. Unfortunately, this book just didn't deliver as well as I had hoped. And I blame Bethany. She didn't make sense. The relationship didn't make sense. Her motivations were unrealistic and rushed. For me, it overshadowed everything else going on in the story. However, Peyton does have a gift for writing. The words themselves were beautiful. I would be interested to see what she comes up as she continues to develop as a writer. less
