review 1: A Sick Day for Amos McGee illustrated by Erin E. Stead, tells the story of the zoo’s most dependable worker, Amos McGee. Every day, Amos gets to work early so he can play chess with the elephant, race the turtle, chill with the penguin (had to make the pun), blow the rhino’s nose, and read to the owl. Amos gets sick one day, and the animals miss him so much, they jump on the bus to go take care of him. The next day they all go back to the zoo together, happy as ever.Reading level: Grades K-2Stead, P., & Stead, E. (n.d.). A Sick Day for Amos McGee.
review 2: A Sick Day for Amos McGee was not only a Caldecott Award winning book, but it was one of my favorite books as well. In the book, the story follows an elderly man named Amos McGee throughout his day. He g
... moreoes to the zoo every day, and takes care of all the animals because he simply loves to do it. One day, Amos woke up and felt too ill to get out of bed. He felt very sick, but he was sad he could not make it to the zoo to see the animals. When the animals at the zoo noticed Amos did not show up at the zoo that day, they decide to go to him to take care of him instead. So the animals leave the zoo, and make their way through the city to little old Amos McGee's house to take care of him while he is sick. I believe the story is a great read for young children because the moral of the story is to give back to those who always are generous and caring to you, and it also teaches a child about how to truly care for the well being of a friend. I think the pictures in this book were remarkable. I enjoyed flipping through the pages and seeing outrageous drawings such as a rhino on a bus, or zoo animals strolling through the city. I think this could help create a sense of whimsical fun to the book, which most young readers seem to enjoy. A Sick Day For Amos McGee was an amazing book, and it deserved the prestigious Caldecott Award. less

This book is about Amos Mcgee who works at a zoo, but one day he cannot go to work because he is sick ,so all of his zoo friends come to visit him instead and bring him presents to make him feel better. The first thing I noticed about this book was that there was so much detail, yet it was still so simple at the same time. The backgrounds were pale colors, but bright enough to still stand out. The rest of the illustrations, such as the people and the animals had a tremendous amount of detail and texture. The reader could see all the details and fur on the animals, and the wrinkles on the old man. The illustrations were not only detailed, but could be used to tell the story as if there were no words present. During one part of the book, there were no words at all, yet the story was still so easy to follow due to the illustrations.A classroom activity that could be used related to this book could be to have students describe a time that they have helped others when they were in need and share it with the class. The first time I read this book was this year for school and I really enjoyed the story as well as the fun illustrations. This story is about a zoo keeper who loves to work with his animals. Then one day he gets sick and can not go to the zoo to visit them. The animals decided to go visit him at his house instead to spend the day with him. This book provides children with the message that your friends will always have your back in times you need them. The pictures in this book are well drawn and fun to look at. The words and pictures good hand in hand in the book and children of all ages will enjoy them. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves animals because of the great relationship Amos McGee has with his animals in the story. This could make for an activity for students to write about their favorite type of animal.
